::One of my favourite places to visit during Chinese New Year is the Chi Lin Nunnery (free entry) near Diamond Hill. Opening hours are 9am to 4.30pm for the temple halls and 7am to 7pm for the Lotus Pond Garden. The Chi Lin Nunnery is a Tang Dynasty style complex with two main sections. The Lotus Pond Garden which is nearest to and connected directly to the excellent Nan Lian Gardens, is a tranquil area with four ponds with lotus plants. There are well manicured shrubs and planted trees with blooms which are lovely to see during the cooler months of the year. Walking through the Lotus Pond Garden, you enter into the interior of the Nunnery where you find more plants and a handful of halls with statue figures of Buddha for worship. The main hall includes five large golden figures that are quite impressive to see. During Chinese New Year, staff are on hand in the main hall passing out lucky lia see (red packets w/ coin) for visitors. There are stands lining the outside walls of the main hall with small souvenirs as well. The grounds of Chi Lin are beautiful to see year round but we particularly enjoy visiting during CNY when the weather is cooler, making it more comfortable to stay for longer periods of time outside. A combined visit with the Nan Lian Garden's which are attached by connective bridge which crosses the road between the two is highly recommended. Both are amongst the most popular and overall best free attractions in Hong Kong. You can make a brief visit of 30-45 minutes between the two if you have limited time. Otherwise, a 2-3 hour visit including lunch at the Vegetarian restaurant in Nan Lian can make for a relaxing and pleasant sightseeing experience in Hong Kong.

::So nice and quiet. You think it's going to be noisy because it's under a highway but it's great. The waterfall is beautiful.

::Beautiful place to visit with the temples and gardens and the high rises in the background. You can't take pictures inside of the statues but there are some nice ones in all gold. The outside is very picturesque with the lotus ponds and the waterfalls and gardens. It's quite easily accessible by bus or mtr, a couple minutes walk from Diamond Hill station. It's worth to come for an hour or two to explore and it's free!
